Your Roof - explained

The Fascia is the long straight board that runs along
the lower edge of the roof. It is fixed directly to
the roof trusses and usually does all the work of supporting
the bottom row of tiles and carrying all the guttering.
The Bargeboard is most prominent piece - and it doesn't
carry any guttering. It sits on the gable-end and really
makes or breaks the look of the house. Over the years
it has evolved into some pretty fancy shapes.
The Soffit board is tucked away underneath the other
two boards supporting them. It performs the vital function
of ventilation in our centrally heated homes. Without
adequate ventilation condensation may form in the roof
void increasing the risk of timber decay.
Finally the Box end is where the other three boards
meet - and is quite complex given all the meeting angles,
planes and heights.
